The experience
What makes this work for someone new to canyoning is the structure: each rappel gets longer and steeper, so you build confidence on shorter drops before facing the 18-meter waterfall at the end. You meet your guide at the parking lot for a safety briefing and gear check, then hike about 45 minutes into Heart Creek Canyon. Before you touch the canyon itself, there's a rappel workshop where you practice basic rope skills on solid ground: the chance to ask questions and get comfortable with the harness and rope before committing to the real thing.
The upper section of the canyon stays relatively dry, giving you room to work through multiple rappels and take in the rock walls without the added challenge of water. Once you move into the lower section, that's where the 18-meter waterfall appears. After the rappels come a series of slides, the fun payoff, and then a hike back to the cars. The whole outing runs four to five hours from start to finish.
You'll wear a wetsuit, harness, helmet and carry a drybag for your belongings. The guide is fully certified in canyoning and stays with the group the entire time. Moderate fitness is expected (you need to hike uphill for about 3.5 kilometers and carry a backpack), but the activity is designed for people trying canyoning for the first time. Children as young as 12 can go if accompanied by an adult.
Is this one for you?The meeting point is the Heart Creek Canyon parking lot, so you'll need your own transport or a ride arranged to get there. This works best if you have a rental car or can share a taxi from Banff or Canmore. If you're staying without a vehicle, factor in the drive time and transport cost before booking.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I do this if I've never rappelled before?
Yes. Heart Creek Canyon is built for beginners, and the guide runs a rappel workshop before you enter the canyon so you practice on solid ground first. Each drop in the canyon gets progressively longer, letting you build skill and confidence before the final 18-meter waterfall.
What's the 18-meter waterfall actually like when you rappel it?
It's the highlight of the trip and the reason most people book this activity. You descend the full height of the waterfall on a rope with your guide managing the descent. It's the biggest rappel of the day, but by the time you reach it you've already practiced on shorter drops in the same canyon.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Swimming ability is not required. You will be partially in water during the lower section of the canyon, but the guide controls your descent and you're secured by rope. You should be comfortable being wet and understand that moving through the canyon means either rappelling or being lowered on a rope.
How do I get to the parking lot if I'm staying in Banff or Canmore without a car?
The meeting point is the Heart Creek Canyon parking lot near Banff and Canmore. If you don't have a rental car, you'll need to arrange your own transport to the lot: a taxi, rideshare or hotel shuttle. The guide meets you there, not at your accommodation.
What do I need to bring besides the gear provided?
Bring a bathing suit, towel, and fully closed footwear that can get wet: running shoes or light hiking shoes work, but water shoes and Keen-style sandals are not accepted. Pack a small lunch or snacks and water for the hike. You'll also need a Kananaskis conservation pass if you're driving your own vehicle.
