You'll belay your guide before your guide belays you.

A full-day rock climbing class in Banff for beginners, led by ACMG/IFMGA-certified guides who teach safety systems, belaying, and climbing technique at a local climbing area. You start with the fundamentals (how to tie in, how to belay a top-rope climber), then move onto the rock itself, working through a variety of routes matched to your pace. All gear is provided, and the program scales to your level: beginners focus on technique and confidence, while intermediate climbers can add rappelling and advanced rope work.

The experience

The day starts with instruction on the ground: site safety, how to recognize overhead hazards, and the mechanics of belaying. Managing the rope while your partner climbs. Your guide demonstrates proper climbing technique, then you move to the rock. At a local climbing area outside Banff, you'll work through a range of routes, each one a chance to practice what you just learned and build the movement skills that make climbing feel less like fighting the wall and more like reading it. The guide adjusts the difficulty as you go, so you're always climbing something that challenges you without overwhelming you.

What you learn depends on what you bring to it. Beginners spend the day on the fundamentals: how your body moves on the wall, how to trust the rope, how to stay calm when the angle steepens. If you already have some climbing experience, your guide can shift into advanced movement, mock leads, or how to build and rig a rappel system. The program runs seven hours, which means real time on the rock, not a quick demo and a photo. All climbing gear comes with you: helmet, harness, climbing shoes, ropes, and belay devices. You don't need to own anything or know anything going in.

Your guides are certified to ACMG and IFMGA standards, which means they've trained to rescue, to teach, and to read the rock and the climber at the same time. Safety is the frame the whole day sits inside: every decision about which route to try next, how long to rest, whether to push harder or dial it back, comes from that priority. Families with children under 10 can ask about a half-day option that fits a shorter attention span and still delivers real climbing.

Is this one for you?The full-day format gives you enough time to move past the nerves and actually feel the climbing, not just the instruction. If you want a shorter introduction or you're climbing with a child under 10, the half-day option covers the same ground in less time.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (10 to 17 years); Child (6 to 9 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the full-day and the introduction option?

The full-day Rock Climbing Adventure runs seven hours and is designed for anyone wanting a complete introduction to the sport, with time to work through multiple routes and build confidence on the rock. The Introduction to Rock Climbing is a shorter format, better suited for families with younger children or travelers wanting a taste of climbing without committing a full day.

Do I need any climbing experience to sign up?

No. The program is designed for beginners and people of all abilities. Your guide will start with the basics (how to belay, how to tie in, how your body moves on the wall), and build from there. If you do have climbing experience, the guide adjusts the instruction to work on skills that challenge you.

What does "belaying" mean, and will I actually do it?

Belaying is managing the rope while your partner climbs. You're the anchor on the ground, controlling the rope so if they slip, the rope catches them. Yes, you'll learn how to belay and you'll do it during the day. Your guide teaches you on the ground first, then you practice while your guide climbs, so you get comfortable with the responsibility before you're both on the wall.

What happens if I'm not strong enough or I get scared on the wall?

The guide picks routes that match your level and adjusts them as you go. You're always climbing something that's possible for you, not something that's beyond you. If you get scared, you tell your guide and you come down. The rope has you the whole time. Climbing is as much about managing fear as it is about strength, and your guide is there to help you do both.

What's included and what do I need to bring?

All climbing gear is included: helmet, harness, climbing shoes, ropes, and belay devices. Bring water, snacks, and layers: Banff weather changes fast. Lunch is not included, so eat before you go or bring something to eat during the break. Wear clothes you can move in and avoid anything too loose that could catch on the rock.
