Five rappels in one canyon, from beginner-friendly to a waterfall drop

Heart Creek Canyon canyoning near Banff is a half-day activity where you hike to the canyon, learn rope rappelling from a professional guide, and descend five sections of varying difficulty, ending with an optional 70-80ft waterfall rappel. The canyon sits 10 minutes from Canmore and 25 minutes from Banff, so the drive is short and the hike to the top takes about an hour on mostly gentle terrain with two steep pitches. All technical gear—wetsuits, harness, helmet, rappelling equipment—is provided, and the guide runs a mandatory safety clinic before you start.

Step-by-step itinerary

Beginner canyoning at Heart Creek Canyon

  • Meet guides at Heart Creek Trail parking
  • Hike 30-45 minutes to canyon top
  • Attend rappel and rope safety clinic
  • Complete 5 rappels with hiking and scrambling
  • Optional wet waterfall rappel or hike around

The Experience

You meet your guide and group at the Heart Creek Trail parking lot, then hike roughly an hour to reach the canyon entrance. The trail is mostly straightforward and beginner-friendly, though the final sections steepen; the operator takes time through both. Once you reach the top, everyone suits up in a provided wetsuit, neoprene socks and helmet, and the guide leads a mandatory rappel and rope safety clinic so you understand the equipment and technique before you clip in. This is not a tour where you watch—you are the one descending.

The canyon itself has five rappels interspersed with scrambling and hiking. The upper section is easier and often dry even in late summer, which is where you ease into the movement and build confidence on shorter drops. As you progress down the canyon, the rappels lengthen. The lower section is always wet, and the final rappel is the showcase: a 70-80ft waterfall drop with a slide at the bottom. If the height or the water is not for you, a hike-around option exists—you do not have to do it. Most people do.

The whole experience runs 4 to 5 hours from start to finish. You will get wet on the lower section, so bring a bathing suit, a towel and a change of clothes to leave in your vehicle. Wear outdoor shoes with good tread—trail runners or light hiking boots work best—because the same shoes go into the canyon and will soak. The operator runs rain or shine unless safety concerns force a cancellation, and the thick wetsuits keep you warm even on cold wet days. You must be at least 12 years old and comfortable with heights, but no previous rappelling experience is required.

Is this one for you?Book the morning departure if you want to hike and rappel while the canyon is cooler and less crowded; the afternoon slot works if you prefer a later start or are traveling from further away. Pickup from Canmore is available on request during off-peak season, though the operator recommends meeting at Heart Creek during July and August when demand is high.

Top questions

How far is Heart Creek Canyon from Banff and Canmore?

Heart Creek Canyon is 10 minutes from Canmore and 25 minutes from Banff by car. The parking area sits 17km east of Canmore on the main highway at the Heart Creek Trail exit, with ample parking for vehicles and RVs.

What is the hike like before the canyon starts?

The hike to the canyon top takes about an hour and is mostly beginner-friendly with minimal incline, though the final two sections are short and steep. The operator takes time through both steep pitches and includes breaks along the way.

Do I need rappelling experience to do this?

No previous rope or rappelling experience is required. The guide runs a mandatory safety clinic at the top of the canyon before you start, and the five rappels progress from shorter to longer, so you build confidence as you descend.

What happens if I do not want to do the final waterfall rappel?

The final 70-80ft waterfall rappel is optional. A hike-around route exists, so you can exit the canyon without descending the waterfall if you choose not to.

What gear is provided and what do I need to bring?

The operator provides wetsuits, neoprene socks, helmet, rappelling harness, and all technical canyoning equipment. You bring a bathing suit, towel, a change of clothes, and outdoor shoes with good tread (trail runners or light hiking boots); the same shoes go into the canyon and will get wet.

What time do the trips depart?

Departures are at 9:00am, 10:30am, 12:00pm, and 1:30pm (starting in July), depending on your booking. All meetings are at the Heart Creek Trail parking lot.
