The Experience

You arrive at Pier 21 on Halifax's waterfront—a national historic site where the building itself is the story. Between 1928 and 1971, nearly one million immigrants passed through these doors. The guided tour walks you through the Pier 21 Story Exhibition, where the space itself becomes a document: you stand in the rooms where arrivals were processed, see the artifacts they carried, and hear the recorded voices of people who came here. The guide—in English or French, depending on what you book—frames the history as you move through, so the architecture and the human accounts work together instead of you assembling them alone.

Admission covers all the museum's exhibitions, not just the guided section. After the tour, you can spend as long as you want in the Canadian Immigration Story exhibition, which traces 400 years of immigration through documents, photographs and video. A 10-minute film plays on a loop, and the Scotiabank Family History Centre sits on-site with expert researchers who can help you search records if your own family came through Pier 21 or arrived in Canada by ship. The museum also has a café and a boutique if you need to sit or pick up something before you leave.

The tour itself takes between one and three hours depending on how much time you spend in each section and whether you use the family history research—there's no fixed endpoint, so you move at your own pace once the guided portion ends. Pier 21 is fully wheelchair accessible, and public transit stops nearby if you're not driving. Book in advance to lock in your preferred time and language; the Canada Strong Pass offers free or discounted admission for anyone 24 and under from mid-June through early September.
