The Experience

The tour starts at Pier 21, the historic immigration hub that earned the nickname "Ellis Island of Canada." From there, the route moves through downtown Halifax to St. Paul's Church, which survived the Great Halifax Explosion of 1917—one of the deadliest industrial disasters in North American history. The guide spends about 20 minutes at Fairview Lawn Cemetery explaining the Titanic's sinking off the coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and the cemetery's role in the aftermath.

The Halifax Public Gardens, the second oldest public garden in North America, offers a quieter stretch where the guide explores the botanical layout and history. Weather permitting, the route includes a drive around the Citadel Fortress, the star-shaped fortification that overlooks the harbor. Then comes the shift from city to coast: the drive to Peggy's Cove and its lighthouse, the most photographed beacon in Canada, standing on the rocky shoreline. The route also passes through the seaside hamlets of Shad Bay, Big Lake, East Dover and West Dover.
