The Experience

The van leaves Vancouver early morning, heading east through the Fraser Valley toward Kelowna. By mid-afternoon you're at a VQA-certified winery in the Okanagan, tasting red and white wines and sampling Canadian ice wine before the drive continues to Kalamalka Lake — the one locals call the Lake of a Thousand Colors because its water shifts from cyan to indigo depending on the season and light. That first night you stay in Salmon Arm or Revelstoke, about 400 kilometers from where you started.

Day two is when the mountains really show up. You pass through Glacier and Yoho National Parks on the way to the Columbia Icefield, where you spend 2.5 hours on the Ice Explorer — a massive six-wheeled bus that drives right onto the ancient ice — and then walk out onto the Icefield Skywalk, a glass-floored platform suspended over the glacier. The drive takes you past Bow Lake and into Banff town by evening. If you want, you can add a sunset tour that night to catch the "Golden Mountain" glow and maybe spot elk or bighorn sheep along the way (that's an extra USD $70 per person).

Day three is the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake loop. You start with the Banff Gondola, an eight-minute ride up Sulphur Mountain that opens up views of six mountain ranges at once. Then down to Bow Falls — the waterfall from the 1953 Marilyn Monroe film — before heading to Lake Louise for 90 minutes to walk around and have lunch if you want. Moraine Lake comes next, about 30 minutes away, and it's the turquoise one you've probably seen in photos. The drive back takes you past The Last Spike, the monument marking where Canada's cross-country railway was completed in 1885. Note: Moraine Lake only opens June through mid-October, so if you're going outside that window, you'll spend extra time at Lake Louise instead.

The final morning you head west toward Vancouver, stopping at the Kamloops Ginseng Factory (Kamloops grows more American ginseng than anywhere else in North America) and passing through Hope before dropping back into the Fraser Valley. You're back in Vancouver by late afternoon. The whole trip includes three nights in hotels, two breakfasts, three lunches, and two dinners, plus all park entry fees, the gondola, the Ice Explorer, and the guide's gratuities. You pick your own hotel for pickup when you book — just make sure you confirm or update that location at least three days before departure, or you'll miss the van.
