The Experience

How do you fit the Icefields Parkway into a single day without driving yourself? This tour handles the route, the stops, and the timing so you see the lakes and falls without building the itinerary yourself. You'll travel in an air-conditioned coach with other travelers, starting from Calgary, Canmore, or Banff depending on which pickup location you choose. The guide navigates the scenic drive and explains what you're standing in front of at each stop.

From April through November, the tour visits Peyto Lake first—a heart-shaped alpine lake with turquoise water fed by glacial melt, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Then Bow Lake, where Crowfoot Glacier sits on the mountainside above, its runoff feeding directly into the water below. The route continues along the Icefields Parkway to Sunwapta Falls, a two-tiered waterfall where the Athabasca Glacier feeds the flow, and Athabasca Falls, where the Athabasca River plunges over quartzite rock with enough force to create a thunderous roar and dramatic rapids. Winter brings a different route: Peyto Lake and Bow Lake stay on the itinerary, but Sunwapta and Athabasca Falls are replaced by Abraham Lake, where frozen bubbles trap beneath the ice surface—a natural phenomenon most visible January through February. You'll do a short snowshoe walk there with equipment provided and warm coffee or tea included.

The tour runs 10 to 12 hours total, which includes the drive time from your pickup point. Winter road conditions and weather can shift the stops or timing, and the operator will notify you the day before if changes happen. Bring your own lunch; the tour does not include meals. A minimum of six people is required for the tour to run, and you'll join with other travelers on the bus—this is not a private vehicle. If there aren't enough participants for your chosen language, the operator will contact you to discuss joining a tour in another language.
