The first thing I noticed was the low, steady thump of elephant feet somewhere ahead—kind of like distant drums but softer. Our guide, Dara, grinned when he saw me trying to spot them through the trees. “They’re always hungry,” he said, handing me a basket of jackfruit slices. The air smelled green and earthy, wet leaves sticking to my shoes as we followed the elephants deeper into Kulen Elephant Forest. One of them—her name sounded like “Mali”—paused long enough for me to offer her a snack. Her trunk was rougher than I expected, and she snuffled at my hand before moving on. It’s funny how quiet such big animals can be when they want.
We’d started early from Siem Reap (pickup right at our hotel—no stress), and by mid-morning I’d already lost track of time. Dara told us stories about how these elephants used to work in Angkor but now spend their days just being elephants here. There was a moment during our walk when the sun broke through the canopy and everything went gold for a second—just light on wet bark and those slow-moving shapes ahead. Lunch came under a canvas shelter in the forest: rice, something gingery with chicken, cold water that tasted extra good after the hike. I still think about that view through tangled branches while eating.
After saying goodbye to Mali (she flapped her ears like she understood), we drove out toward Kampong Phluk on Tonle Sap Lake. The road got bumpier and then suddenly there were houses balanced on stilts above brown water, laundry flapping everywhere. We took a boat past floating markets—kids waving from doorways—and then switched to a canoe for the flooded forest part. It was quieter than I expected; just paddle splashes and birds calling out from somewhere you couldn’t see. Li, our boat driver, pointed out tiny fish darting below us—I tried to say thank you in Khmer and totally butchered it. He laughed anyway.
