The experience

You're picked up at 8 am from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle for the 45-minute drive to the quay at Kampong Phluk: a name meaning "harbor of the tusks." The village itself sits on Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, and the landscape changes depending on the season. From February to July, the water recedes and you can reach the village by minibus or motorbike on a bumpy road that's normally flooded. From August to January, you board a local boat at the quay and ride through the wetland area to get there, passing trees adapted to being completely submerged part of the year.

Once you arrive, a 1.5-hour boat ride takes you through the village and across the lake. You'll see houses built on high stilts, where villagers live during the rainy season and move to small huts near the waterfront during the dry season to fish. The pagoda sits on the only butte, the only building not on stilts. Your guide points out the school, government houses and the daily activities of residents, explaining their culture, livelihood and how they adapt to the lake's dramatic seasonal changes. The boat ride itself is the main event: you're on the water with no visible shoreline, birds overhead, and the village architecture framing everything around you.

If you visit between August and January, you can pay extra for a canoe ride paddled by villagers into the dense flooded forest. A separate option that takes you deeper into the mangrove than the main boat covers. The tour ends with a return boat ride to the quay, then the drive back to your hotel or another drop-off point in Siem Reap city center. Cold bottled water is provided throughout.
