Remote temple ruins, winding roads, laughter and quiet moments

You’ll wind through Cambodia’s countryside by minibus with a small group and local guide, exploring the wild ruins of Beng Mealea and Koh Ker temples. Expect mossy stones under your hands, simple lunch options nearby (or bring your own), and stories you won’t find online. By sunset you’ll carry home more than photos—maybe even a little peace.

The Experience

We were already bouncing along the red dirt road before I’d really woken up — the minibus windows foggy from the morning air, everyone half-whispering or just listening to the tires crunching gravel. Our guide, Dara, smiled and handed out cold towels (which felt surprisingly good on my neck even though it was still early). He started telling us about Koh Ker, how it’s over 120km from Siem Reap and used to be a capital for a while. I tried to picture that — all this jungle hiding what was once the heart of an empire. The drive felt long but never boring; at one point we passed a group of kids waving wildly at us, which made everyone on board grin for no real reason.

Beng Mealea came first — Dara called it the “Indiana Jones” temple and yeah, I get why. Roots everywhere, stones scattered like someone just gave up rebuilding centuries ago. There was this smell of damp moss and something floral I couldn’t place. We wandered through collapsed corridors, sometimes in silence except for birds and our shoes scraping old stone. At one doorway, Dara pointed out carvings half-swallowed by vines. “Nature wins here,” he said with a shrug. I tried saying thank you in Khmer (pretty sure I butchered it), which made him laugh.

Lunch was…well, rustic. The cafe near Koh Ker had plastic chairs and fans that seemed mostly decorative, but my fried rice tasted better than expected after hours outside — maybe hunger is the best seasoning? Some folks brought their own food; nobody minded either way. After eating we climbed Prasat Thom’s steep steps together (I definitely needed both hands), then just stood up there catching our breath while looking out over endless green. It wasn’t quiet exactly — cicadas going wild — but it felt peaceful in that messy way travel sometimes does when you’re tired and happy at the same time.

I still think about that view from the top of Koh Ker. The ride back was quieter; some people napped, others stared out at fields sliding past in the late light. Dara shared stories about his family near Siem Reap — little things you wouldn’t read in a guidebook. When we finally rolled back into town around 6pm, dusty and a bit sunburned, I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day.
