The experience
The tour opens with arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, where your guide meets you and drives to Club du Lac Tanganyika, a lakeside hotel on Lake Tanganyika's shores. If your arrival time allows, a short city tour of Bujumbura introduces the city's historical landmarks and daily rhythms before you settle in for the night.
Day two splits between water and cultural sites. A boat cruise on the Rusizi River in Rusizi National Park puts you in view of hippos, crocodiles, and bird species as the river meets Lake Tanganyika. From there, you walk through Teza Tea Plantations (over 600 hectares of green fields near Kibira National Park), and a forest hike in the surrounding hills. The afternoon takes you to Gishora Royal Drums Sanctuary in Gitega Province, where UNESCO recognizes the legendary Royal Drums of Burundi as intangible cultural heritage. You watch a traditional drumming performance and learn the palace history. The National Museum of Gitega, housing historical artifacts and cultural collections, rounds out the day before you stay overnight in Gitega.
Day three focuses on natural landmarks. Karera Waterfalls presents five cascades dropping through lush vegetation. The southernmost source of the Nile River (marked by a pyramid modeled on Egyptian originals) sits nearby as a geographical landmark tied to the legendary river. The drive continues to Rumonge on Lake Tanganyika's shores, where you spend the night at Sunstone Beach Resort. On day four, you return to Bujumbura for your airport transfer and departure.
