The experience

The tour opens with arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you to Club du Lac Tanganyika, a lakeside hotel on Lake Tanganyika's shore. If your flight timing allows, a short city tour of Bujumbura introduces the city's historical monuments and daily life before you settle in for the night.

Day two moves inland to four distinct stops. You visit the Busekera Pygmy Village to meet members of the Batwa community and learn their traditional music, crafts and way of life. Then comes the Teza Tea Plantations near Kibira National Park: over 600 hectares of green tea fields where you walk through the rows and hike into the surrounding forest for its mountain air and wildlife. The afternoon centers on the Gishora Royal Drums Sanctuary in Gitega Province, a UNESCO-recognized site preserving Burundi's legendary royal drums. You watch a traditional drumming performance and hear the history of the palace. The National Museum of Gitega, which houses historical artifacts and cultural collections, rounds out the cultural immersion before you return to the hotel.

On the final morning, you board a boat on the Rusizi River in Rusizi National Park. The cruise passes the junction where the river meets Lake Tanganyika, and hippos, crocodiles and bird species move through their natural habitat around you. This is the last stop before your departure.
