The Experience
The day starts at 10:00 with pickup from your Sofia hotel in a private air-conditioned car. The 45-minute drive north takes you to Divotinski Monastery, an active male monastery founded in the 11th century on the slopes of Lyulin Mountain. The site earned the name "Royal Monastery" from repeated visits by Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand, and it remains one of the oldest monastic communities near Sofia. You'll have time to walk the grounds and see the restored chapel before heading down to Bankya.
After the monastery, you have free time in Bankya's center to grab lunch on your own. Then comes the main event: 3.5 hours at the Royal Baths Resort, a completely restored bathhouse that opened in 1911 and was favored by Bulgarian royalty for its mineral water. The thermal zone holds pools heated to 35–37°C fed by Bankya's natural springs, along with mineral showers, massage jets and a tepidarium. The wellness side adds two steam baths, a Finnish sauna, herbal sauna, laconium, and two hydromassage pools at 32°C, plus a children's pool at 30°C. You move between them at your own pace—there's no schedule or group activity once you're inside.
Departure back to Sofia happens around 16:30, with arrival at your hotel by approximately 17:30. The entire outing runs about 7.5 hours door to door, and the driver remains English-speaking throughout.
