The experience
The tour opens at Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Brunei's largest mosque, a modern structure built to mark the Sultan's 25th year on the throne. From there you move to Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, the iconic landmark of the capital, with a photo stop from The Frame. A third stop is the entrance to Istana Nurul Iman, the world's largest residential palace. These three sites anchor the city portion of the morning.
The second half shifts to water. A boat carries you through Kampong Ayer, the centuries-old settlement known as the Venice of the East, where houses and shops sit on stilts above the river. You visit a local home, sit with the residents, and have light refreshments while they share their daily life. The boat ride and life jacket are provided. After that, the tour ends at the Royal Regalia Museum, which houses the royal regalia and coronation costumes of the Sultan. Photos are allowed in the main gallery only, and the museum closes on Fridays and Sundays.
A bottle of water comes with the tour. Your guide is licensed and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Pickup happens from your hotel or the airport. If your group is eight or more and needs a permit, an additional service fee applies. Children from age 4 are welcome, and infants sit on an adult's lap.
