The experience
Tiradentes is small enough to walk end to end in a morning. This tour moves through the city's layout methodically, from the Church and Largo das Mercês down through the Bridge of Forras, the Bom Jesus da Pobreza Chapel, the Chapels of the Passinhos, and into the warren of named alleys (Quarry, Matrix, Pacu, Rosary) that hold the city's older architecture. You pass the Padre Toledo Museum, the Town Hall, the Jail (now the Museum of Santana), the Museum of Liturgy, and the San Jose Fountain. The guide walks you past each one, naming it, explaining what it is, and telling you which ones charge admission and when they're least crowded.
The chapels that don't charge entry and are open during the tour get walked inside. The others stay exterior stops where the guide contextualizes the building's history and art so you know what you're looking at from the street. By the end you've seen the city's full geography (the churches, the museums, the alleys, the woods), and you know which ones to return to on your own time. An accredited guide leads in either English or Portuguese, and the pace suits families with children from age 5 onward.
