The experience
Santa Teresa is where you start, at Rua Aarão Reis 105, where the guide shows you how the pedal-assisted e-bikes work before you begin. The bicycles have no accelerator (they're not motorcycles), and they assist you as you pedal, which means the steep climbs through the forest and up to the viewpoints don't require the fitness level a regular bike would demand. From there you ride through the neighborhood's colonial streets toward Dona Marta Lookout, passing the Castelo Valentim and the CEAT school, which was inspired by an old palace in Florence.
The route climbs into Tijuca forest, where you'll encounter monkeys, toucans and other animals as you pass through the roads that wind around Corcovado. You stop at Dona Marta Lookout to photograph the city with Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf in the frame, then continue to the Emperor's Table (where Dom Pedro II once held picnics), and on to Vista Chinesa, one of Rio's least accessible viewpoints. From there you can see Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, the lagoon, Ipanema and Guanabara Bay. The guide takes souvenir photos at each stop and explains how the city's neighborhoods and geography fit together.
The descent takes you past the Horto waterfalls, where you can stop to swim, then along the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon cycle path toward Copacabana. You ride the full length of Copacabana's cycle path, continue to Botafogo beach with its view of Sugar Loaf, and finish through Flamengo Park, covering most of it before climbing back into Santa Teresa and ending near where you started. The tour runs four to six hours depending on pace and how long you spend at viewpoints.
Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so you ride with just your guide and no other travelers. Choose it if you want to cover Rio's major neighborhoods and viewpoints in one morning or afternoon without the steep climbs exhausting you. The pedal assistance handles the forest paths and climbs to the viewpoints that would demand much more effort on a regular bike.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Italian and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What neighborhoods and viewpoints does the e-bike tour actually cover?
The tour starts in Santa Teresa and passes through Dona Marta Lookout, the Emperor's Table, Vista Chinesa, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Copacabana Beach, Botafogo and Flamengo Park. You stop at multiple viewpoints to photograph Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and the city's southern neighborhoods, and the guide explains how Rio's geography and districts connect.
Will I encounter wildlife on this tour through the forest?
Yes. As you ride through Tijuca forest on the roads around Corcovado, you'll have encounters with monkeys, toucans and other exotic animals. The guide passes through these areas as part of the route, so sightings are possible and probable depending on the time of day.
How do the e-bikes work, and do I need cycling experience?
The e-bikes are pedal-assisted, meaning they help you as you pedal but have no accelerator and are not motorcycles. Basic cycling experience and good balance are required, and you need to be at least 18 years old. The guide shows you how the bikes work at the start before you begin riding.
Can I stop for photos and breaks during the tour?
Yes. You stop at Dona Marta Lookout, the Emperor's Table and Vista Chinesa to take photos, and there are bathroom and bar facilities at the Centro de Visitante Paneiras near Christ the Redeemer. You can also stop at the Horto waterfalls to swim and freshen up.
