itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Rio's street art and neighborhoods

  • See art around the neighborhood
  • Visit Selaron's homage site
  • End tour in young art neighborhood

We started in Copacabana, right where the city noise mixes with this weird calm you get early on a humid morning. I could already see splashes of color on the walls before our guide, Lucas, waved us over—he had paint on his sneakers and a grin like he’d just heard a good joke. We wandered through alleys where the air smelled faintly of spray paint and something sweet from a nearby bakery. Lucas pointed out a mural by Panmela Castro—he told us about her activism, but honestly I kept staring at the way the pinks bled into each other. There was a guy selling coconuts who nodded as we passed; I think he knew Lucas. Maybe everyone does.

I didn’t expect to feel so much at Selaron’s tribute spot. It’s tucked away, quieter than I thought it would be. Lucas explained how Selaron came from Chile but made Rio his home, and there’s this mosaic that feels like someone poured their whole heart into it. Someone had left fresh flowers—red ones—and for a second nobody said anything. Then an old woman shuffled by and smiled at us; she said something about “arte é vida” (art is life) and kept going. That stuck with me.

The tour wound through more streets—one corner was so packed with layers of tags and faces that it looked almost alive when the sun hit it just right. We ended up in this younger part of the neighborhood where people were arguing over soccer scores outside a tiny bar. Lucas asked if we wanted to grab a cold Guaraná before heading back—I did, mostly to keep talking about what we’d seen. I still think about that blue mural near the bus stop, actually. The colors seemed brighter after everything else.
