The experience

The first thing I noticed was the salty air: that mix of seaweed and dust you only get near Praia do Rosa. The bike showed up right at our pousada, delivered by a guy named João who gave a quick nod and checked the brakes like he’d done it a thousand times. He handed me a helmet (still warm from the sun), a little bag for my phone, and this padlock that looked sturdy enough to chain up a small boat. No fuss, no paperwork marathon. Just a quick signature on his phone and we were off.

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t biked much since college, so the first few minutes along those bumpy dirt roads toward Imbituba felt wobbly. But the Oggi mountain bike handled better than I expected: gears clicked smooth even when we hit patches of sand. There was this one stretch where eucalyptus trees lined both sides and it smelled sharp and green. My friend tried to race ahead but got distracted by some horses grazing behind a fence. We stopped for water near a little bar where locals were playing cards: one old man waved us over but we kept pedaling because the clouds were starting to look heavy.

If you want to try all the way to Garopaba, it’s doable, though my legs were definitely complaining by then (moderate fitness is no joke here). João had said just call if there’s any problem. He’d pick up anywhere between Praia do Rosa and Garopaba or Imbituba. Knowing that made it easier to push on without worrying about getting stranded if something broke down. The light started going gold on the dunes as we headed back. I still think about that view sometimes, especially how quiet it got except for birds and our tires crunching gravel. Not everything went perfectly (my friend lost her sunglasses in the sand), but honestly, that made it feel more real.
