experience

What’s the experience like?

We started our Porto Seguro tour with the kind of morning that makes you forget your phone — first stop was Vale Verde village. The air smelled like sugarcane and coconut shells. Our guide, Ana, handed me a tiny glass of regional liqueur (I tried to sip it slow but honestly, it was gone in two gulps). She laughed and said most people do the same. After that we rolled into Trancoso’s Quadrado. I’d seen photos but standing there — those faded pastel houses from the 1600s, kids chasing a ball under tangled trees — it felt different. There was this old man selling cocadas who winked at us when we tried his recipe in broken Portuguese. I still think about that view from the churchyard out over the cliffs.

The next day was Arraial d’Ajuda. We took the ferry from Porto Seguro — only ten minutes but enough for a breeze to mess up my hair completely. Mucugê Beach was quieter than I expected for somewhere so close to town; four hours just drifted by between salty swims and watching locals play frescobol near the waterline. In the afternoon we wandered through Arraial’s village streets where every house seemed painted a different shade of blue or pink. There was this bakery with warm pão de queijo that I can’t really describe except to say I ate three without thinking.

Espelho Beach came after a drive south — about 70km from Porto Seguro but it didn’t feel long with all the chatter in the van (and one guy snoring). The cliffs there are something else; not dramatic exactly, just quietly tall and red against that glassy sea. Ana pointed out how the water shifts color depending on the sun — green then almost turquoise if you squint right. We climbed up for photos but mostly just stood there letting wind tangle our shirts.

The last day was all about Porto Seguro’s historic center. We walked cobbled streets past churches older than any building back home. There was a capoeira group practicing in one square — music echoing off whitewashed walls while kids spun barefoot on stone. At Coroa Vermelha Beach we found street stalls frying acarajé; I burned my tongue a little but didn’t care because everyone around us was laughing at something only they understood. It felt like being let in on a secret for just a minute before heading back to reality.
