The experience

The day starts in Recife's Marco Zero square, designed by landscaper Roberto Burle Marx and ringed by colonial buildings, the Malakof Tower, and the Paço do Frevo. From there you walk Rua do Bom Jesus and the narrow streets of Recife Antigo, the oldest quarter, where the guide points out how Portuguese, African, indigenous, Jewish and Dutch cultures shaped the architecture and street life. The Giant Dolls museum sits next: more than 50 carnival figures, each around 4 meters tall, portraying Brazilian and international personalities up close.

The route then moves through the Church of Madre de Deus, a 17th-century baroque structure built by the Oratorian priests and faced in reef stone, and the Alfandega do Recife, a former convent and customs house on the Capibaribe River now housing shops and a view of Santo Antonio island. Then you climb into Olinda, starting at Carmo square where the church begun in 1580 stands at the top. The climb winds through narrow streets lined with colorful colonial houses, passing the São Bento monastery, a baroque complex from 1597 with painted altars and high artistic value inside.

Alto da Sé, at the heart of Olinda's historic site, is where the viewpoint opens across the city. The guide shows you the city observatory, the Church of Mercy, the Church of São Salvador (the city's patron), and the handicraft shops scattered through the slopes. A panoramic stretch along the Olinda waterfront rounds out the day, letting you see both the historic site and the modern city before the return journey.
