The Experience

We rolled out of Maceió just after breakfast, windows down because the air felt heavy but sweet — that salty smell you only get near the coast. Our driver, Paulo, pointed out sugarcane fields flashing by. I tried to ask him about the best beach snacks in my rough Portuguese and he grinned, “Espere para ver!” (Wait and see!). The drive to Barra de São Miguel isn’t long — maybe 40 minutes? — but it’s enough for the city noise to fade into birdsong and motorbikes zipping past.

At Barra de São Miguel we hopped out for photos. The sand was still cool underfoot, not yet hot from the sun. Some folks stayed behind to swim or just watch the fishermen untangle their nets — I almost did too, but curiosity won out. Our guide gathered us up for the next leg: Gunga Beach. There’s this moment when you cross over a little bridge and suddenly the lagoon opens up on one side, palm trees everywhere. I didn’t expect how bright everything would look — like someone turned up the color dial.

Gunga Beach is where time gets weirdly slow. We had hours there, but it slipped by fast between trying grilled queijo coalho (that squeaky cheese on a stick), watching kids race quad bikes along the sand, and debating if we should take a speedboat ride or just nap under an umbrella. I ended up doing neither — just walked along the waterline with my shoes in hand while Paulo told me about his childhood here. He laughed when I tried to say “coco gelado” properly; pretty sure I’ll never get that right.

I still think about that stretch of blue water and how everyone seemed a little lighter after lunch — maybe it was just being away from everything for a few hours. On the way back to Maceió, sand stuck between my toes and hair smelling faintly of sunscreen, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once all day. That’s rare for me.
