The tour starts with a 30-minute off-road drive in a Toyota 4x4 from your hotel to the base of the dunes. Once the vehicle is parked, you continue on foot with a certified guide who speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese. The walk takes you through the lagoons themselves (Blue Lagoon, Lazy Lagoon, Toyoteiro Lagoon, Emerald Lagoon and others) each one distinct in color and character. The guide leads the pace and points out what makes each lagoon worth the stop.

The whole outing runs about three hours total, with the drive and the walking combined. You're back at your starting point by around 1 PM, which leaves the rest of your day open. The tour suits any fitness level, and infants can ride on an adult's lap during the 4x4 portion. Note that lagoons can dry up seasonally. When that happens, the operator reroutes to lagoons with water so the tour still works.
