The Experience

The first thing I remember is the color — that wild, impossible blue at Lagoa Paraíso. We’d barely rubbed the sleep out of our eyes when we tumbled out of the van and there it was: hammocks strung right over the water, swaying just a little. The air tasted faintly salty-sweet, and I could hear someone laughing behind me (maybe our guide? I never caught his name properly). I tried to say “Lagoa Paraíso” with my best accent — got a big grin for effort. We stayed until almost lunchtime, toes in the sand, and honestly I could’ve napped right there if lunch wasn’t calling.

After that came Buraco Azul. It’s not some ancient spot — actually just a pit left by roadwork that filled up after heavy rain. But you wouldn’t know it by looking; it’s pure turquoise now, and everyone was splashing around like kids. There was this moment where I dunked under and everything went silent except for muffled voices above. Kind of peaceful. Then we stopped at the famous Sloth Tree (I mean, it really does look like it’s lying down for a nap), and our guide explained how even trees here seem to take things slow.

Later, some of us hiked out to Pedra Furada — bring water if you go, seriously — while others wandered into Vila de Jeri instead. I joined the hike but honestly kept stopping to stare at random cacti or try to catch my breath (the sun is no joke). The rock formation frames the sea perfectly; people lined up for photos but I just watched for a minute. The village itself felt relaxed, sandy streets and all sorts of smells coming from open kitchens. By late afternoon we piled back into the vehicle for one last stop: climbing up Amâncio’s dunes as the sun started dipping low. Wind in my face, sand everywhere — worth it though. That sunset light sticks with you longer than you’d think.
