The experience
The tour starts at Praça Pedro II, the city's founding square, where the French originally built a fort that evolved into the Palace of the Lions, now the state government seat. The square holds the City Hall Building, the Episcopal Palace (built by Jesuits in the 17th century), the Sé Cathedral, and small townhouses that form one of the largest historical centers in the Americas. A bronze sculpture of Mãe D'Água by Newton Sá and a light installation in front of the Cathedral mark the plaza's landmarks.
From there, the walk moves through Praça Benedito Leite, recently renovated with new flooring, lighting and a restored bandstand, then into the narrow colonial streets (Rua do Giz, Rua da Estrela, Rua Portugal), where the guide shares stories tied to the city's past. The Escadaria das Neves, a limestone staircase of 35 wide steps from the 18th century, carries its own history. Casa das Tulhas, built in the mid-18th century as a granary, now functions as one of the main markets for Maranhão products and remains a working part of the city rather than a museum piece.
Roundtrip transfer from your hotel is included, though a small number of accommodations fall outside the standard pickup routes. You'll be contacted in advance with the closest meeting point if that applies. The guide speaks Portuguese. Note that the Palace of the Lions and Arthur Azevedo Theatre open to visitors only in the afternoon from 2pm, and museums close Mondays for maintenance, so timing matters if those interiors are on your list.
