We’d barely stepped onto the boat in Bombinhas when our guide, João, waved us over to the side. The engine hummed low as we drifted past the village, and you could smell salt and grilled fish coming from somewhere on shore. I tried to ask about the name “Cação” but mangled my pronunciation — João just grinned and told me it means “dogfish,” which I definitely hadn’t guessed.

The water in Zimbros Bay was glassy that evening, with little splashes of silver where tiny fish jumped. When we reached Praia do Cação, kids from another boat were already daring each other on the famous trampoline.
