The experience
The tour starts at Pampulha Lagoon, where you walk past four iconic Niemeyer structures: the Casa do Baile (a UNESCO-recognized cultural center), the Pampulha Casino from 1943, the Yacht Tennis Club, and the Church of San Francisco of Assisi. A modernist chapel that broke with religious architecture tradition through its free curves and swung concrete, decorated with tiles by Candido Portinari and sculptures by Alfredo Ceschiatti. You stop at the Bandeirante Mirante, where bronze sculptures honor Kubitschek, Niemeyer, Burle Marx and Portinari, the visionaries who shaped this ensemble into a UNESCO World Heritage site.
From there the route moves into the city center and the cultural landmarks tied to Belo Horizonte's musical revolution. You visit Praça Sete, the heart of the city where Milton Nascimento worked as a young office worker. The Archangelo Maletta building, a 1961 structure that houses Cantina do Lucas (a bohemian gathering place for intellectuals and musicians), and the Boate Berimbau, where Wagner Tiso and Milton Nascimento performed some of their first shows in BH. You walk through Praça da Liberdade, surrounded by museums and historic buildings, then pass the Minas Tennis Club, where you learn about Pacífico Mascarenhas, the "father of Bossa Nova Mineira" and a central figure in the city's musical life. A 30-minute stop at the Central Market lets you browse over 400 shops selling local crafts and regional food.
The tour ends in the Santa Tereza neighborhood, where you pass the Borges Family House and reach the Clube da Esquina Memorial, a space honoring the musical movement that emerged from the corner of Ruas Paraisópolis and Divinópolis. Here you get a welcome snack and drink, then sit for dinner (your choice of the chef's chicken or fettuccine with bar cheese fonduta), while live music plays on two stages. The permanent exhibition "Because They Were Called Dreams" uses photographs and QR codes to tell the story of the movement across six environments, with audio in up to 60 languages. Live performances happen every night the space is open, drawing from the rich catalog of MPB (música popular brasileira) from Minas Gerais and Brazil.
