The experience
The tour leaves São Paulo and travels 180 km to Aparecida in the Paraíba Valley, a city built around one miracle. You start at Porto Itaguaçu, the riverbank where the statue of Aparecida was found in the 18th century and where her first documented miracle took place. From there the route moves through the Historic Center and the Old Church of Aparecida, where you learn the architecture and the history of other miracles that drew pilgrims here over centuries. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese, and the stops are built around the sites themselves, not around shopping or photo ops, though free time in the Historic Center does let you pick up religious items if you want them.
The National Temple of Aparecida is the centerpiece: it's the largest Marian temple in the world, and when you arrive the guide walks you through the original statue of Aparecida and the mosaics in the central dome, explaining the liturgical symbolism built into the building. A noon Mass follows (optional, one hour), and after that you have the afternoon free to visit the Vows Room, the Museum Tower, the Wax Museum, take the cable car, or see the Nativity Scene on the Mount of Olives. Lunch is on your own. The return to São Paulo happens in the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel within 6 km of Sé Square.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the tour is wheelchair accessible throughout. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. The bilingual guide and all transport fees are included. You pay separately for lunch and any museum or attraction tickets you choose to enter.
Is this one for you?The ten-hour commitment means you leave São Paulo in the morning and return in the late afternoon, leaving your evening free. If you want to attend the noon Mass, the schedule is fixed around it. If you skip it, you gain time to linger at the temple or explore the optional attractions on the grounds.
