The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Manaus at 8 am and a speedboat ride to the Meeting of Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and sandy-colored Solimões River flow side by side without mixing. From there, a motorized canoe takes you upriver to Amazon Luna Lodge, arriving around 11:30 am. The lodge sits on the Rio Negro with private rooms, air conditioning, and hot water: a base for the next three days of river and jungle work. Your guide speaks English or Portuguese and knows the region's medicinal plants, wildlife, and the families living along the waterways.
Day two splits between jungle and water. A 3.5-hour trek starts at 8 am, with your guide pointing out plants, insects, and spiders as you walk. At noon you return for lunch, then a motorized canoe takes you to the Anavilhanas archipelago: a chain of islands you explore by boat (or on foot during the dry season from February to August). Day three begins before sunrise with a canoe paddle to watch the jungle wake up, followed by breakfast and a visit to an indigenous village where you participate in a welcome ritual and learn how cassava is processed for local meals. A stop at a floating dock lets you interact with river dolphins. The afternoon brings a second village visit on Acajatuba Lake to deepen your understanding of the community.
On the final morning, breakfast comes at 7:30 am, then you explore the Ariau River. A tributary rich in wildlife where you can swim (or wade on a beach during dry season). Lunch is at the lodge, and at 1:30 pm you depart for Manaus, arriving around 4 pm for hotel or airport drop-off. Mineral water is provided throughout. The boat rides depend on water level and can take anywhere from 20 to 50 minutes between stops.
Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to sleep in the jungle rather than commute from a city hotel each day. The lodge base lets you paddle at sunrise, trek at midday, and fish at sunset without losing hours to travel. The 4-day length fits the full river cycle and the indigenous village visits. Shorter tours skip one or both.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What exactly is the Meeting of Waters and why does it look that way?
The Meeting of Waters is where the Rio Negro and the Solimões River meet near Manaus. The two rivers have different temperatures, densities, and sediment loads, so their waters flow side by side for several kilometers without immediately mixing, creating a visible line between dark and light water. You see it from the speedboat on the first morning.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to do the river activities?
The Ariau River swim on day four is optional and shallow in places, especially during the dry season when a beach forms. Piranha fishing and canoe trips do not require swimming ability. The tour does require at least moderate physical fitness because of jungle trekking and frequent boat transfers, and it is not recommended for travelers with mobility problems, spinal injuries, or poor cardiovascular health.
Will I see pink river dolphins?
The tour includes a visit to a floating dock where you interact with river dolphins. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the dock is set up specifically for dolphin encounters. Your guide will explain their behavior and habitat during the visit.
What is the indigenous village visit actually like?
You participate in a traditional welcome ritual with the local community, then have time to buy handcrafted souvenirs made by residents. On day three's second visit to Acajatuba Lake, you learn how cassava is processed into food: a staple protein for the families living there. The visits are designed to give you direct contact with the people and their daily practices rather than a staged tour.
How much of the tour is on the water versus in the jungle?
Day one is mostly boat travel to the lodge. Day two splits a 3.5-hour jungle trek in the morning with an afternoon boat trip to Anavilhanas. Day three mixes an early canoe paddle, village visits, and a dolphin dock stop. Day four includes an Ariau River exploration by boat and swimming, then the return journey to Manaus. Expect roughly equal time on water and in the jungle across the four days.
