A three-hour painting class in Paraty's Historic Centre taught by artist Maria Cruz Urquijo, who has worked in painting and sculpture for over 25 years. You sketch, choose your materials, paint your own piece with guidance, take a coffee break to discuss your work, and finish the details. The class runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, and all brushes, inks and materials are included.

The experience

The class unfolds in four stages, starting with a brief introduction to art and sketching exercises using your fingers or pencils while Maria talks through the creative process. You then choose the format and materials for your painting and begin your own work. The pace gives you time to develop an idea rather than rush through a predetermined project.

Midway through, you step back for a coffee break and discuss what you're making and how it's coming together. This pause lets you think about the piece before returning to finish the details. Maria's atelier sits in Paraty's Historic Centre, and she draws on her own artistic path (her story as a painter and sculptor) to shape how she guides you. All brushes, cloth and ink colors are provided. You bring nothing but your willingness to make something.
