The experience

The Pantanal holds roughly 4,700 plant and animal species across the world's largest wetland, and this tour moves through it three ways: by vehicle on Transpantaneira, by canoe at water level, and on foot. Day one begins with pickup at Cuiabá airport or your hotel, then a photo safari during the drive south through Poconé to the lodge, with stops along the way to watch for the hyacinth macaw, the world's largest parrot, and the roughly 10 million caimans that live here. You reach the lodge by afternoon, eat lunch, then paddle a canoe until sunset before a night safari on foot or by vehicle, when nocturnal species emerge.

Day two starts at 5 a.m. to catch the sunrise when birds are most active and mammals move before heat sets in. After breakfast you walk an ecological trail through the wetland on foot, then eat lunch before a final photo safari on Transpantaneira heading back north. The driver drops you at Cuiabá airport or your hotel by afternoon. Groups stay small (a maximum of three or four travelers in a 4x4 jeep), or larger groups travel by minibus, depending on the booking.

Is this one for you?Choose the 4x4 jeep if your guide speaks your language (English, Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian) and you want closer wildlife encounters. The minibus works better for larger groups who don't need personalized stops.
