The experience
The tour starts in Mostar and moves through three distinct stops, each one revealing a different layer of the region's geology and history. Radimlja comes first: a medieval necropolis whose richly decorated tombstones date back a thousand years, offering a window into life in medieval Bosnia-Herzegovina. The tombstones themselves are the record here, carved with detail that has survived centuries.
Vjetrenica is the centerpiece. Described in Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia, the cave system is vast enough that much of it remains unexplored, but the accessible passages show what makes it remarkable: underground rivers and lakes, stalactites and stalagmites, and fauna adapted to the darkness. An experienced guide leads the way through the tunnels, pointing out the natural formations and the hydrology that carved them. The cave feels removed from the surface world entirely.
After emerging from Vjetrenica, the tour visits Zavala, an Orthodox monastery built directly into the rock face nearby. Monks still inhabit it, and the route through the monastery winds through tunnels and stairways that connect the living spaces carved into the stone. The full day takes six hours from start to finish, with hotel pickup and return included.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What exactly is Vjetrenica Cave and why is it worth the trip?
Vjetrenica is one of Europe's largest cave systems, documented in Pliny the Elder's ancient writings. The accessible sections contain underground rivers, lakes, and natural stone formations (stalactites and stalagmites) that formed over millennia. Much of the cave remains unexplored, but the passages open to visitors show the scale and the geological forces that shaped them.
How difficult is the walk through Vjetrenica, and what should I wear?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The cave passages are navigable with an experienced guide leading the way. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip, as the stone can be slippery in places, and bring a light layer: cave temperatures stay cool year-round. The guide will point out where to step and pace the group accordingly.
What is Radimlja, and how long do we spend there?
Radimlja is a medieval necropolis where tombstones carved between the 10th and 15th centuries still stand. The stones are richly decorated and reveal details about life in medieval Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is a stop on the way to Vjetrenica, giving context to the region's history before descending underground.
Is Zavala monastery still active, and can we go inside?
Zavala is an active Orthodox monastery carved into the rock face. Monks live there, and visitors pass through the tunnels and stairways that connect the spaces built into the stone. It is the final stop after Vjetrenica, offering a different kind of underground architecture: one shaped by human hands rather than water and time.
What is included in the price, and what should I bring?
The tour includes an English-speaking guide, transport by air-conditioned minivan, hotel pickup and drop-off from selected hotels, and local taxes. Bring water, a light snack if you prefer, sturdy shoes, and a camera if you want photos inside the cave. Food and drinks are not provided, so plan accordingly.
