The experience

You start from your Sarajevo hotel and drive to the trailhead, passing through Umoljani first: a village known for its 15th-century stećak tombstones and a 200-year-old Ottoman mosque that survived the country's recent wars. The hiking trail itself runs along the edge of Rakitnica Canyon, a 26-kilometer gorge carved by the Rakitnica River between two mountains and one of the deepest canyons in Europe. The canyon sits only 30 kilometers from Sarajevo but feels remote: the river has carved walls so steep and inaccessible that it draws mountaineers and people who want wilderness without crowds. Along the way you pass Studeni Potok, an intermittent stream that winds through the landscape in curves the locals describe with a legend you'll hear from your guide.

Lukomir itself is unlike anywhere else in Bosnia: a stone village of roughly 200 people where nomadic customs and Dinaric highland traditions still govern how people live and build. The houses are made of stone with roofs of cherry-wood tiles, a design that has held for centuries. The village sits so high and isolated that in winter, from December through April and sometimes later, the only ways in are on skis or on foot. A newly built lodge now hosts visitors year-round. You'll spend the afternoon there with a local family, eating a homemade lunch of traditional Bosnian dishes with vegetarian options included. This is not a museum performance.
