The Experience

The hike starts from Umoljani, a medieval village on the southern slopes of Bjelašnica mountain, where your guide will brief you on the day ahead. You'll make a short stop at Dolovi to see the ancient necropolis and learn about Bosnian history, then begin the main trek. The route follows Studeni Potok stream for two kilometers and runs mostly along the edge of Rakitnica Canyon—the views open up across the gorge as you climb. Before reaching Lukomir, you'll pass the 40-meter Peruće Waterfall and walk through Gradina, a highland summer settlement where herders still bring livestock to graze in the warmer months.

Lukomir itself sits at the highest point in Bosnia, isolated enough that it has kept the same way of life for over 600 years. Your guide will walk you through the village, talk about its history, and take you to the best viewpoint on the edge—the place where the canyon drops away and the scale of the landscape becomes clear. Lunch is traditional Bosnian food, freshly cooked by local hosts in the village; dietary options (halal, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free) are available if you arrange them when you book. You'll have time to look around, photograph, and browse local handcrafts before the descent or return journey.

Transport is private, so your group travels together in an air-conditioned vehicle from Sarajevo and back.
