The Experience

“You have to smell the copper dust — that’s how you know it’s real,” our guide Adnan grinned as we ducked into a tiny workshop off Baščaršija. I’d never thought about the smell of metal before, but he was right — there was this sharp, earthy scent mixed with coffee from somewhere nearby. The old man at the workbench barely looked up as he hammered away at a coffee grinder. His hands moved so fast, I almost missed the way he smiled when Adnan greeted him in Bosnian. The streets in Sarajevo’s Old Town are narrow and kind of uneven — shoes clacking on stone, people weaving past with bags or trays of bread.
