Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Sarajevo's Old Town and cuisine

  • Meet guide at Meet Bosnia Tours agency
  • Walk through oldest streets of Sarajevo
  • Visit traditional workshops and craft shops
  • Try savory and sweet Bosnian specialties
  • Learn about Bosnian cuisine and crafts
  • Return to the office with full stomach

“You have to smell the copper dust — that’s how you know it’s real,” our guide Adnan grinned as we ducked into a tiny workshop off Baščaršija. I’d never thought about the smell of metal before, but he was right — there was this sharp, earthy scent mixed with coffee from somewhere nearby. The old man at the workbench barely looked up as he hammered away at a coffee grinder. His hands moved so fast, I almost missed the way he smiled when Adnan greeted him in Bosnian. I tried to say ‘hvala’ too (thank you), but probably mangled it. Li laughed behind me.

The streets in Sarajevo’s Old Town are narrow and kind of uneven — shoes clacking on stone, people weaving past with bags or trays of bread. We stopped at a bakery for something flaky and warm (I still don’t know what it was called), and then Adnan handed us little bites of smoked meat and cheese from a deli that looked older than my parents’ house. He told us some of these recipes haven’t changed in centuries. It started to drizzle a bit, but nobody seemed bothered; everyone just kept chatting under awnings or passing around tiny cups of strong coffee.

We visited another shop where paintbrushes are made by hand — apparently they last fifty years if you treat them right? The craftsman showed us how the bristles are tied, his fingers stained with dye. There was something calming about watching him work while the rain tapped on the window outside. By then I’d lost track of time (and calories). We finished with baklava so sweet it stuck to my teeth, and more coffee — dark, thick, almost muddy at the bottom. I still think about that taste whenever I smell cardamom now.
