The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the color—the Cargill salt flats near Bonaire’s southern tip looked almost pink under the sun. Our guide, Ana, pulled over so we could get out and feel the crunch of salt under our shoes. She told us stories about the old slave huts lining the road, their walls faded but still standing since 1850. The wind carried this faint mineral tang mixed with sea air.
