South Bonaire’s salt flats, flamingos and a quiet snorkel stop

You’ll drive through Bonaire’s south island with a local guide—see salt flats glowing pink, visit historic slave huts from 1850, spot wild flamingos and donkeys, then snorkel right off the beach inside Bonaire Marine Park with all gear provided. The pace is relaxed and personal; you’ll notice details you’d miss alone—and maybe find yourself still thinking about those colors days later.

The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the color—the Cargill salt flats near Bonaire’s southern tip looked almost pink under the sun. Our guide, Ana, pulled over so we could get out and feel the crunch of salt under our shoes. She told us stories about the old slave huts lining the road, their walls faded but still standing since 1850. The wind carried this faint mineral tang mixed with sea air. Flamingos stood in the distance, just close enough to see their awkward grace. I tried to get a photo but mostly ended up laughing at myself squinting into the light.

We passed donkeys (apparently they just roam here) before parking by the beach for our snorkel. I’d been nervous about snorkeling—never really got used to breathing through that tube—but Ana was patient and showed me how to adjust my mask until it stopped leaking. The water in Bonaire Marine Park was clearer than I expected; tiny blue fish darted past my fingers and I could hear my own breath echoing in my ears. At one point I surfaced just to look back at the shore—salt piles shining white behind us, sky wide open. It felt quieter underwater than above, if that makes sense.

Afterwards we sat on the sand for a bit, drinking cold water from reusable bottles (Ana said no plastic allowed on Bonaire). She pointed out where the Salt Pier jutted into the sea and told us how locals watch for changing currents before picking snorkel spots—something I’d never have thought about. The tour is private so it was just us; no rush at all, which honestly made it easier to ask questions or just stand around gawking at flamingos. Still thinking about that view from beneath the surface.

What’s included
