The Experience

"The reef here, it doesn't get tired of showing off," our guide said as we dropped anchor near the first snorkel site. That stuck with me — because it was true. The water around Bonaire's Marine Park is so clear and crowded with life that you stop noticing the boat pretty fast. We suited up with the provided snorkel gear and went down into what felt like an aquarium someone had left open. Parrotfish, angelfish, the whole reef ecosystem doing its thing while we floated above it. The guide stayed close, pointing out details — the way certain corals only open at certain times, which fish were territorial, where to look for the smaller stuff.

After the first snorkel, we sailed to a sheltered spot where the water was so calm it looked fake. Some people stayed in the water, some stretched out on deck.
