The experience
The day starts before dawn with pickup from your hotel or the bus terminal in Uyuni, then heads straight to the train cemetery to see the rusted locomotives left behind by the mining era. From there the route enters Colchani, a small community at the edge of the salt flat where you stop to explore rustic craft workshops and watch salt being processed by hand. The real expanse opens once you cross into the Salar itself: the tour makes stops to watch salt extraction in action, to see the natural springs called the eyes of the salt flat, and to visit the Playa Blanca Salt Hotel, now a museum that once operated as the world's only building made entirely of salt blocks.
Incahuasi Island sits alone in the middle of the salt flat, covered in giant cacti and ringed by sea-rock fossils from when this was an ancient ocean. You hike to the island's viewpoint and stand in a 360-degree expanse of white that stretches to every horizon. Lunch happens somewhere in the salt flat itself, eaten in the landscape you came to see. As the afternoon light flattens and turns gold, the tour positions you for sunset, when the salt takes on color and the sky deepens. The return to Uyuni takes the evening hours.
The tour runs in a 4×4 vehicle built for the terrain, with a Spanish-speaking guide who drives and leads the group. Groups stay small, capped at six travelers, which means less time waiting at stops and more flexibility for photography. The full day runs ten to eleven hours from pickup to return.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How rough is the drive across the salt flat in a 4×4?
The Salar de Uyuni is flat and hard-packed, so the 4×4 ride is steady rather than bouncy, though the vehicle is built for the terrain and the day is long. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and moderate physical fitness helps with the hike up Incahuasi Island.
What's the train cemetery actually like?
The train cemetery is a graveyard of old locomotives and rail cars left from Bolivia's mining boom, now rusted and still in place. It's the first stop of the day and gives a glimpse of the region's industrial past before you enter the salt flat itself.
Do I need special boots or gear for Incahuasi Island?
The hike on Incahuasi Island is moderate and the footing is solid, but you'll want sturdy footwear. The tour operator can advise on boot sizes when you book. Bring layers since the altitude and wind can make it cool even in daylight.
Is lunch included, and what kind of food is it?
Lunch is included and served in the heart of the Salar de Uyuni. The operator provides the meal as part of the tour. Additional drinks beyond what comes with lunch can be purchased separately.
Can I photograph the salt flat reflections, or do I need special equipment?
The salt flat is naturally reflective when wet, and standard cameras capture the effect. Special photographic equipment to enhance reflection shots is available as an optional add-on at checkout if you want to bring professional gear.
What time does the tour end, and when do I get back to Uyuni?
The tour runs ten to eleven hours total from pickup, so if you're picked up at dawn, you'll return to Uyuni in the evening after sunset. The exact return time depends on your hotel location and the day's light.
