The experience

You start at 8am from your Cochabamba accommodation and travel toward Toro Toro with stops built into the route: breakfast at the Cradle of Bolivian Presidents, a detour through Tarata's colonial houses, a visit to Huayculi's ceramic workshops, and a photo stop at the Rio Caine where the Potosí and Cochabamba borders meet. By 12:30 you're in Toro Toro for lunch, then the afternoon opens into the Museum, Cementario de Tortugas, where fossils and burial sites from the Cretaceous and Quaternary periods sit on display. Next is Casa de Piedra Pachamama Wasi, where dinosaur-formed carved stones and plant fossils line the rooms, followed by the Centro Artesanal de la Mujer, known for textiles made by local women. You settle into your hotel for dinner and rest.

Day two takes you to Ciudad de Piedra (Itas) at 9am (a set of stone labyrinths with narrow caverns that feel like walking through a stone city), then into Cavernas de Umajalanta, the largest underground cavern in Bolivia. Inside, you pass through corridors lined with stalactites and stalagmites, see curious figures formed by the cave walls, and visit a small lagoon full of blind fish. Torches and helmets are provided. You return to the hotel for dinner and another night's rest.

The final day starts with breakfast, then a climb to Cerro Wayllas to observe dinosaur footprints, followed by the Mirador del Cañón de Toro Toro: a viewpoint where rocky formations rise like the Grand Canyon and more dinosaur footprints are visible in the stone. You descend the stone-made stairs into the canyon itself and arrive at Vergel's natural waterfalls and pools, where a snack is served. After lunch back in Toro Toro, the drive returns to Cochabamba, arriving around 7pm.
