The experience

The tour starts with an 8am pickup from your Cochabamba hotel or hostel and heads toward Toro Toro with stops along the way: breakfast at the Cradle of Bolivian Presidents, a look at colonial houses in Tarata, ceramic workshops in Huayculi, and the Rio Caine river that borders two departments. You arrive by lunchtime and spend the afternoon visiting the Turtle Cemetery museum (with fossils and burial sites from the Cretaceous and Quaternary periods), Casa de Piedra Pachamama Wasi (where dinosaur-carved stones and plant fossils are displayed), and an artisan center known for woven textiles. Dinner and overnight stay follow at a hotel with a private bathroom.

Day two focuses on underground exploration. After breakfast you travel to Ciudad de Piedra (Itas), a stone labyrinth of narrow caverns that feels like walking through a carved city. After lunch comes the main event: Cavernas de Umajalanta, Bolivia's largest underground cavern system. You pass through multiple corridors lined with stalactites, stalagmites and curious rock formations, and visit a small lagoon inhabited by blind fish adapted to the darkness. The guide provides torches and helmets for safe passage through the passages.

The final day begins at Cerro Wayllas, where you observe dinosaur footprints preserved in stone, then move to the Mirador del Cañón de Toro Toro for views of rocky formations similar to the Grand Canyon. You descend stone stairs into the canyon itself and reach the natural pools and waterfalls of El Vergel, where a snack is provided. The return to Cochabamba takes the afternoon, with arrival around 7pm.
