The experience
The tour runs seven days across four regions, each with a different rhythm. You'll start in Thimphu, where the kids can watch students carving wood and painting thangkas at the Institute of Zorig Chusum, then walk through a sacred garden overlooking the Wangchuk River. From there you drive to Punakha, stopping at Dochu-la pass (3,088 meters) to see 108 chortens and, on clear days, the high Himalayan peaks including Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan's highest mountain. The route includes the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge (160 meters long and the country's longest), which frames views of Punakha Dzong and the valley below.
What sets this apart for families is the hands-on pieces. You hike to Chemi Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple built after a blessing by the divine madman Drukpa Kunley, walking through rice fields and past farmhouses to get there. At Gangtey valley, a gentler nature trail takes about an hour and a half through pine forest. In winter months, you might spot endangered black-necked cranes. You'll hoist prayer flags, turn prayer wheels at the memorial chorten in Thimphu, and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, built in the 7th century. The Tiger's Nest, Taktsang, sits on a cliff face 3,120 meters up. The hike is moderate and the views of the valley below are the reason families make the climb.
Each night you stay at 3-star properties. One night includes a stay at a historical heritage farmhouse where you experience real Bhutanese rural life. After a day of hiking, you soak in a traditional hot stone bath (stones heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub of water), then eat an authentic farmhouse meal and sit by a bonfire. All meals throughout the seven days are included, as is ground transportation and a certified English-speaking guide who can adjust the itinerary if your family wants to add sites or spend more time at a particular stop. The government Sustainable Development Fee (USD 100 per person per night) is also included in the price.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour with your own guide and driver, so the pace and stops flex to what your family wants to do each day. You're not moving as a group or sticking to a fixed schedule. Choose it if you want the freedom to linger at a temple, skip a site, or add a hike based on how your kids are feeling, rather than following a set itinerary with other travelers.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4).
Can we really customize the stops, or is the itinerary fixed?
The tour lists specific places (monasteries, dzongs, valleys, temples), but your guide can swap or add stops based on what your family wants to do and how much time you have. If your kids are more interested in the arts and crafts institute than a particular temple, or if you want to spend an extra day in one region, the guide works with you to make it happen.
What happens during the hot stone bath at the farmhouse?
Stones are heated in a fire, then placed into a wooden tub filled with water and herbs. You soak in the warm bath to relax after hiking. It's a traditional Bhutanese practice and a real part of how people in rural areas unwind. The farmhouse meal follows, eaten together as a family.
What meals are included, and do they work for picky eaters?
All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are included throughout the seven days. Bhutanese cuisine centers on rice, vegetables, chili and cheese. Your guide can communicate dietary preferences or restrictions to the restaurants and farmhouse ahead of time so the kitchen can adjust.
Do we need any permits or visas to enter Bhutan?
International flights to Bhutan are not included in this tour price. You'll arrange your own flights. Once you arrive, your guide handles the ground logistics. Check current visa requirements for your nationality before booking, as they vary by country.
