The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the Segways lined up in the sun—it was the low hum of voices around the Royal Naval Dockyard, mixed with that salty Bermuda air. Our guide, Marcus, had this relaxed way of explaining things—he even joked about his “Segway dance moves” during training. I was a little nervous at first (balancing always sounds easier than it is), but after a few wobbly circles in the parking lot, it actually felt kind of natural. The wireless headset made it easy to hear Marcus even when we drifted apart—he pointed out old stone walls and told stories about British sailors who’d once marched these paths. I kept glancing at the ocean, just beyond the dockyard walls, that blue so bright it almost looked fake.

Gliding along on the Segway felt like cheating—like walking without effort. There was this moment when we stopped near an old cannon and Marcus asked if anyone knew why they built the clocktower with two different-sized faces (I guessed wrong; he laughed). The breeze picked up and I could smell sunscreen and something sweet from a food stall nearby. We passed locals chatting on benches, some waving as we zipped by. At one point my Segway beeped at me for going too fast—guess I got carried away. So yeah, not exactly graceful but nobody fell off.

We ended near Clocktower Mall, which used to be part of the naval base but now has shops tucked inside those thick stone walls. I wandered in for a cold drink and just listened to people talking—accents blending together. It’s funny how riding a Segway around Bermuda can make you feel both like a tourist and somehow part of the place for an afternoon. I still think about that view from the dockyard wall—sunlight flickering on water—and how simple it all felt for those couple of hours.
