The experience

You leave Hopkins Village by boat for the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, a 30-minute crossing that gets you to the first island. The tour hits up to four cayes (Bread and Butter, South Water, Bird and Tobacco) each one a stop to swim, snorkel or rest on white sand. A local guide leads the snorkeling portions, pointing out the coral gardens, tropical fish, rays and the occasional dolphin that drift through these waters. Snorkeling gear is provided, so you arrive ready to go in.

The day splits between the water and the islands themselves. At each caye you have time to explore the reef or simply float and watch the fish move through the shallows. The pace is set by the guide and the group, not by a fixed schedule at each stop, so if the snorkeling is good at one island, you stay longer. Lunch is BBQ style, served on one of the islands, with soda, water and fruit snacks throughout the day.

Hotel pickup is included if you're staying in Hopkins, and the boat returns you by late afternoon. The tour runs seven hours total, which accounts for travel time between islands and the stops themselves.
