Step-by-step itinerary
Kayak through Nohoch Che’en caves
- Kayak through five caves
- Explore Crystal Cave section
- Observe stalactites and rock formations
- Experience Maya history and wildlife
The experience
You arrive at Nohoch Che'en Archaeological Reserve ready to paddle, not to sit and watch. The kayaks are packable and designed for comfort (the operator's own distinction from the standard rigid boats other outfits use), so you spend the five to six hours actually paddling, not fighting the equipment. You'll move through five separate cave systems, each one a shift from darkness into the open jungle canopy and back again. The Crystal Cave section is the centerpiece: turquoise water, towering cave entrances, stalactites overhead.
A live guide leads the paddle and handles the route through each cave passage. The headlamp, helmet and life vest come with the kayak. You'll hear wildlife sounds as you move through the reserve: the audio landscape changes as you exit and re-enter the cave systems. Lunch is a cave burrito with fresh tortillas, vegetables and meat, eaten during the day. Park fees and all equipment are included in the booking.
The activity demands moderate physical fitness and comfort in enclosed spaces for extended periods. The caves are the main event, so claustrophobia or anxiety in tight, dark passages is a real constraint. Weight limit is 280 pounds. Children must be at least 40 inches tall to participate. Public transportation options are available to reach the reserve.
