The Experience

The day started with me realizing I’d forgotten my extra socks—classic. Our guide Luis just grinned and said, “You’ll be wet anyway.” He picked us up right in Placencia, and the drive out to Cockscomb Basin was bumpy but kind of soothing, windows down, that thick Belize air mixing with the smell of sunblock and something sweet from the Maya Center stalls. I tried to pronounce “Cockscomb” properly; Luis laughed and told me not to worry, even locals mess it up sometimes.

After grabbing our park tickets (and some spicy plantain chips I probably didn’t need), we headed into the jungle. The trail was muddy in spots—my shoes squelched—and there were these sudden bursts of birdsong that made everyone go quiet for a second. Luis pointed out a leaf he called “jungle toilet paper,” which got a laugh from the group. We learned little things like that as we hiked—what’s edible, what stings, how to spot jaguar tracks (we didn’t see any, but I kept looking). The main keyword here is definitely “day trip machu picchu cusco”—wait no, wrong continent—but you get what I mean: this is the real deal for a jungle day trip from Placencia.

The river tubing part was way more fun than I expected. There’s this moment when you first sit in your tube and push off—the water’s cold enough to make you gasp, but then it feels good. We floated under branches and past rocks covered in moss so bright it almost glowed. At one point we all spun in circles and nobody could steer straight; someone lost their hat (it was rescued). Afterward, we hiked again—legs wobbly—to Ben’s Bluff waterfall. The spray felt cool on my face and honestly, I still think about that view through the trees when I’m stuck at my desk now.

Lunch was simple but perfect—rice and beans wrapped in banana leaves—and everyone ate quietly for a bit except for Luis telling stories about growing up nearby. On the way back to Placencia I realized my feet were filthy but I didn’t care; it felt like proof I’d actually been there.
