This private tour moves through the Ypres Salient as it was between 1914 and 1918, following the Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African and British soldiers who fought toward Passchendaele in 1917. It's the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the world, and the scale of it — the white stones stretching across the slope — doesn't prepare you until you're there.

Essex Farm Cemetery is where Lt Col John McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields" at the hospital site, and the guide explains how that poem made the poppy the symbol of remembrance across the Commonwealth. You'll also hear about the first German gas attack on 22 April 1915, when chlorine gas rolled across the lines against French soldiers, and how the Canadians held the position despite it.
