The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and walks you through Ghent's medieval trading past, starting at the Graslei: the old port where merchants once moved goods through the city. From there, the route connects the three towers that define the skyline: St. Bavo's Cathedral, which holds the Van Eyck brothers' Ghent Altarpiece; the Belfry, built as the people's tower and once used as a prison; and St. Nicholas' Church, a 12th-century landmark with its patron saint carved into the façade. Each stop has a story the guide shares, not just dates and names, but the conflicts, rebellions and stranger details that shaped the city.

You'll see Gravensteen Castle, the medieval fortress that sits in the middle of the city center rather than on its edge, and learn why the square in front of it earned two names: the square of death and the square of life. The Ghent Town Hall gets its own explanation: why it looks architecturally "confused" ties directly to a major conflict in the city's history. You'll walk past the street art district, designated by the city to protect its monuments from graffiti, and stop at the House of Alijn, the only surviving "god house" hospital, to hear how it came to be.
