The experience
The tour starts at Vrijdagmarkt, the Friday Market, one of Ghent's most important historical squares, then moves through the medieval neighborhood in the shadow of Gravensteen Castle: the former residence of the counts of Flanders, a moated medieval fortress in the city center. You'll see it from two different perspectives as the route passes through charming cobblestone streets and over bridges with views of the Lieve Canal. The guide points out the Prince's Court where future Emperor Charles V was born, a spot most visitors miss.
The route takes in the smaller market squares and guild halls, the Old Meat Hall with its medieval construction, and the Groentenmarkt, where you'll taste one of Ghent's typical local products. The Graslei and Korenlei waterfront, the former medieval port, shows how guild halls, grain storage buildings and toll booths still stand as reminders of their original functions. From St. Michael's Bridge you get the view of Ghent's three towers that locals call the selfie spot. The Belfry, symbol of medieval power, and the controversial modern City Hall on Emiel Braunplein round out the architectural contrasts.
St. Bavo's Cathedral is the centerpiece: you'll step inside to see the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers, one of the most important artworks in the world and the most stolen piece of art in history, including by Hitler. The guide explains the artistic details and the painting's turbulent past. The tour also covers a second medieval castle, recently restored and now a local hangout, and the Town Hall surrounded by the stone palaces of Ghent's powerful families.
