The Experience
We were already weaving through Bruges’ Market Square when our guide, Pieter, paused to point at the Belfry. He had this way of talking — like he actually knew the tower personally. The bells started up right then, echoing over the cobbles and mixing with the smell of waffles from somewhere close by. I tried to imagine what it sounded like centuries ago, but honestly, it was loud enough in 2024. Pieter joked that if you could climb all 366 steps without stopping for breath, you deserved a medal (I didn’t try).
We ducked into Saint John’s Hospital next — old brick walls and a faint herbal smell that reminded me of my grandmother’s pantry. Inside, he told us stories about nuns patching up merchants and soldiers. There was this little moment where sunlight hit a stained glass window just right and I felt oddly quiet — maybe it was just the hush in there or maybe Bruges does that to you. At the Beguinage, whitewashed houses lined up around a courtyard full of daffodils (in April anyway). A woman in a blue scarf nodded at us as she passed; Pieter lowered his voice out of respect for the sisters who still live there.
I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a history tour but apparently Bruges has a beer pipeline running under its streets — De Halve Maan Brewery pipes it straight across town. Pieter called locals “Fools of Bruges” (with affection) and told us how they got that nickname after some royal drama involving swans and an emperor. We stopped by Minnewater, the Lake of Love — honestly? It looked like something out of a fairytale but smelled faintly mossy by the edge.
The tour finished at Burg Square where city hall loomed all gothic and serious. My feet were tired but I kept thinking about those tiny moments — Pieter’s stories about lost dukes, the way people greet each other here with quick nods instead of big waves. If you want to feel like Bruges is whispering secrets just for you… well, this private walking tour is probably as close as it gets.
