The Experience

The coach picks you up from your hotel and heads straight to Mount Gay, the world's oldest rum company still operating. You walk through the distillery floor where the copper stills are actually working — the smell hits you first, sweet and sharp at once. A guide walks you through how they've been making rum the same way since 1703, pointing out the fermentation tanks and the aging barrels stacked three stories high. It's not a museum; it's a working place, and you can feel the difference.

After the distillery tour, you move into the Copper Still Bar for the Signature Tasting. This is where it gets real. You taste maybe four or five different rums — the white, the gold, the aged stuff — and the bartender explains what you're actually tasting: the molasses notes, the oak, how long each one sat. They don't rush you through it. You get time to ask questions, and if you want to buy a bottle at the end, the prices are fair because you're buying direct. The whole thing takes a couple of hours, and by the time you leave, you actually understand why people care about rum from Barbados.

On the way back, the coach stops at Four Square Distillery as well, so you see two different operations in one day. Four Square is smaller, older in some ways, and the contrast is interesting — you start to notice what makes each one distinct.
