The Experience

“Don’t step on the ginger lily!” our guide called out, and I almost did—too busy gawking at the tangled green in Hunte’s Garden. The air was thick with that earthy, sweet smell you only get after rain (it had rained, briefly, but nobody seemed to mind). Anthony Hunte himself waved at us from his porch—he looked like he’d been part of this garden forever. We wandered through little paths where birds darted past and classical music floated somewhere above the ferns. I’m not sure if it was the music or just the way everything felt alive, but I caught myself smiling for no real reason.

Cherry Tree Hill surprised me—the view opened up suddenly and you could see all the way down to the coast, blue on blue. St. Nicholas Abbey was cooler inside than I expected, old stone walls and rum barrels stacked in corners. I tried a sip of their rum—burned a little going down but tasted like molasses and spice after. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.

The last stop was the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, under these huge mahogany trees where monkeys darted around like they owned the place (maybe they do). You could see little green flashes in their fur if you looked close enough. Kids squealed when one monkey snatched a bit of fruit from another—it was chaos but somehow peaceful too. Walking back along those old red bricks (our guide pointed out stamps from Liverpool), I realized how much history is tucked into everything here—not just museums or big sights but even under your feet.
